Roofing Dumpster Rentals for Shingle & Tear-Off Disposal
Tearing off a roof in the Temecula Valley? Roofing debris is heavier than almost anything else you can put in a dumpster — and renting the wrong size costs you money in overweight fees or a second haul. Victory Dumpster Rentals delivers the right container for your tear-off, often same-day, throughout Murrieta, Temecula, and Riverside County.
Why roofing debris is different
Shingles are deceptively heavy. A dumpster that looks half empty can already be at its weight limit, because roofing debris is dense — it's asphalt, stone granules, and nails, not bulky-but-light household junk. For shingle tear-offs we recommend our 20-yard dumpster: it gives your crew the wall height and open space to load fast from a ladder or chute, with the capacity to take a full tear-off in one container on most homes. For tile roofs — clay or concrete — the game changes completely: tile is so heavy that it belongs in our 10-yard lowboy, a low-walled container reinforced for dense material and kept within legal road weight.
The other thing that surprises homeowners: a second layer of shingles doubles your debris weight. Plenty of older homes in Murrieta, Hemet, and Lake Elsinore have a layover (a second layer installed over the first) — if yours does, plan for twice the tonnage.
How much do roofing shingles weigh?
Roofers measure roofs in "squares" — one square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. Here's what tear-off debris typically weighs by material:
| Roofing material | Weight per square | 20-square roof | Recommended container |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asphalt shingles, single layer (3-tab) | 200–250 lbs | 2–2.5 tons | 20-yard dumpster |
| Asphalt shingles, single layer (architectural) | 300–400 lbs | 3–4 tons | 20-yard dumpster |
| Asphalt shingles, two layers | 450–700 lbs | 4.5–7 tons | 20-yard dumpster + planned swap-out |
| Wood shake | 300–400 lbs | 3–4 tons | 20-yard dumpster |
| Clay or concrete tile | 800–1,200 lbs | 8–12 tons | 10-yard lowboy, multiple hauls |
Weights are estimates and include underlayment and nails. Tile roofs are common across the Temecula Valley — because of the extreme weight, tile tear-offs almost always require multiple lowboy hauls. Important: unlike our standard lowboy rentals, lowboys rented for clay or concrete tile include 4 tons of disposal weight. Since a full tile roof typically weighs 8–12 tons, we'll plan the number of hauls with you up front so there are no surprises. Call us and we'll schedule swap-outs around your crew so the job never stalls.
What size dumpster do I need for a roof tear-off?
Your roof's surface area is larger than your home's footprint because of pitch and overhangs. Here's a quick sizing guide for a typical single-layer asphalt shingle tear-off:
| Home size | Approx. squares | Approx. debris weight | What we recommend |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,500 sq ft home | 17–20 squares | 2.5–4 tons | One 20-yard dumpster |
| 2,000 sq ft home | 22–27 squares | 3.5–5.5 tons | One 20-yard dumpster (plan a swap-out if it's a double layer) |
| 3,000 sq ft home | 33–40 squares | 5–8 tons | One 20-yard dumpster with a scheduled swap-out |
Steeper pitches and larger overhangs add squares. If you know your exact square count from your roofer's estimate, call us with that number and we'll size it precisely. For step-by-step site prep, read how to prepare for a roof tear-off.
Can I mix tile, shingles, and other debris?
Short answer: keep tile and shingles in separate containers. Tile is several times heavier per square than shingles, so mixing them makes loads impossible to weigh predictably and can push a container past legal road weight before it looks half full. The right setup is a 20-yard dumpster for shingles and general roofing debris, and a 10-yard lowboy dedicated to tile. If your project also includes interior demo, add a separate container for that rather than topping off the roofing box. Old tile in good condition can sometimes be salvaged — ask your roofer before it goes in the lowboy.
Protecting your driveway
A loaded roofing dumpster is heavy, and so is the truck that picks it up. We place containers carefully and recommend placing boards under the rails on decorative concrete or pavers — common in communities like Redhawk, Canyon Lake, and Bear Creek. Tell us about your driveway when you book and we'll plan placement that protects it.
